最早記錄的版本是大約1765年的倫敦《mother goose's melody 》中：
hey diddle diddle，
the cat and the fiddle，
the cow jump'd over the moon，
the little dog laugh'd to see such craft，
and the fork（餐叉） ran away with the spoon
1569年印刷的一本thomas preston的戲劇書《一個令人惋惜的悲劇》可能和這首詩有關（ a lamentable tragedy mixed ful of pleasant mirth， conteyning the life of cambises king of percia）：
they be at hand sir with stick and fiddle;
they can play a new dance called hey-diddle-diddle

hey-diddle-diddle據說是十六世紀時候的一種宮廷舞，這首童謠的題目也被叫做“hi diddle diddle“，“the cat and the fiddle“，或者“the pig jumped over the moon”，追溯到16世紀，在早期中世紀的手抄本中，彈奏小提琴的貓是一種很流行的畫面，而很多小旅館也起名叫cat and the fiddle，在1587年的 old chaunge（london）就有一家。
關於這隻童謠的起源， james orchard halliwell認為是古希臘和hathor 崇拜有關墮落腐敗的惡作劇。cow jump over the moon 是一个经典场景，hathor 是埃及神話中的愛神，當然，說愛神有些籠統，因為她也是代表著生育、快樂、女性之愛、來世等。她在古埃及王朝統治之前被異教團體所崇拜，經常被描繪成一隻和圣蛇坐在一起的母牛。所以the cow jumped over the moon中的cow，不知道和hathor有沒有關係。james也認為有可能和星座有關（比如金牛座、小犬星座）、埃及的一場戰爭、伊麗莎白和 lady katherine grey以及她們和hertford和 leicester伯爵的關係、日益艱難的天主教牧師的反牧師的情緒、katherine of aragon (katherine la fidèle)，彼得大帝的一個妻子或法國佳萊的一位行政長官。這些假設都被 jrr tolkien在the man in the moon stayed up too late所諷刺，還有很多的學者認為這首童謠的句子沒有被證明或者就是毫無意義的。
在這裡要提到一個叫做trap-ball的遊戲，它和貓有關，是一個古老的英國遊戲，可以被追溯到14世紀，18-19世紀時尤其受歡迎，又被稱為knurr and spell ，northe spell，或者nipsy ，在小酒館十分流行。現在已經很難再看到這個遊戲了，它和木頭或者陶罐的節有關，和現在的高爾夫完全不同，那個被敲打的小球有彈簧。大概是要把一個胡桃木大小的木頭槓桿，敲打這個結并念出咒語，遊戲的關鍵是要在盡可能遠的距離敲到那個胡桃結，對於棍子的長短直徑有著嚴格的要求。
